Just as they nailed the range of tween emotions in 2024s’ Inside Out, the genius Pixar animators created an accurate, heartbreakingly sweet and smart ode to screen addiction in Toy Story 5. I have created a theme for Back To School in the Midway library for the past few seasons based on the Summer’s blockbusters, and this year’s theme will, of course, be guided by the famous, beloved and oft-disregarded toysa. The kids’ names on the bottom of their worn toy feet may be faded, but Pixar’s carefully curated societal message is gorgeously clear.

Since the district chose to ban mobile devices during school hours, I have doubled down on my own committment to increasing library circulation and reading advocacy. (I actually spent less time than usual on my digital citizenship lessons as a result. whoops) I’m pleased to say that we did have 1600 more books checked out in the 2025-2026 school year than the previous year.
